Bog oak was created after sea level changes caused the inundation of prehistoric oak forests and the fallen trees were submerged under water and silt in anaerobic conditions over a period of several thousand years.The dissolved iron salts in the water react to the tannin in the oak, the same chemical reaction as happen when iron or steel is in contact with fresh sawn oak. Fiendishly hard to take through the drying process but reliable and stable when successfully done. The resulting handsome, dark and dense timber has been found to be for guitar building and produces quality instruments. When carbon dated, bog oak from this source was found to be 5300 years old
